Happy Friday peeps!
Summer is in full swing and it’s usually a time when we tend to take some days off to recharge and relax.
I’ve had an intense few weeks at work and feel as if the need to switch off is almost palpable.
I love taking breaks as, I’m sure, is the case with most people. To me, though, it’s not just about taking a break; it's about allowing myself to decompress. Such breaks, to me, are crucial for maintaining a level of well-being over the long run.
I am taking some time off this week and have made a plan that, hopefully, will help me effectively switch off and relax.
This is going to be one special break. Well, one could argue that all breaks are special in some way, shape or form but my wife and I are about to have our first child in less than 2 months. It goes without saying, thus, that our lives are about to change. The thought of having and raising a child, joyous though it may be, has generated an entire bundle of anxiety inducing thoughts in my head. I don’t think I’ve catastrophised this much in my entire life.
It’s very important for me, personally, to take a step back, take stock of where things are and let off some steam. Whatever is to come won’t be a walk in the park. Juggling work, child duties and everything else won’t be easy. I need to focus on taking one step at a time and learn to be kind to myself.
So, here’s my plan to unplug……
Set Physical and Mental Boundaries
In order to unwind, I need to establish a boundary between my work and personal time. Physical action is where this begins i.e. switching off my work computer and clearing my desk. I work form home mostly my work desk is pretty much always there to distract me. Clearing it and cleaning it up is how I signal my brain that it’s time shift to a lower gear.
With that, we’re officially in holiday mode! Step 1: Done!
Embracing a Calming Routine
With work related distraction out of the way, I’m diving into a different routine. For me, this has to do with engaging different parts of my brain. Writing, of course, is one activity that relaxes me so I’ll take some more time than I usually do for that.
Exercise is another one. Usually, I go for a run or a long walk. This week, I’ll shake things up a bit and try swimming or biking. No particular reason here. Just think I need to shake things up a bit.
I think another thing I’ll try to do is read. By ‘read’ I mean reading an actual book. Its been a while since I’ve done that.
With all that, I hope to get my mind off work-related and other anxiety inducing concerns. Let’s see how it goes.
Mindfulness and Meditation
I used to be skeptical about meditation and mindfulness but, off late, I’ve picked it up a bit and it’s been great. The long and short of it, to me at least, is to take deep breaths and to try to focus on the ‘now’. I started meditating for a few minutes before dozing off at night but now I try to do it whilst taking long walks as well.
It helps me clear my thoughts. It’s also a great way to decompress and relax, especially after a long, stressful day. I’ll make sure to keep up with my meditating routine in general but especially during this time that I have to myself.
Digital Detox
Finally, I’ll make an effort to limit screen time. I’ve been overloading on it recently, especially since I started Substack. I have made such commitments to myself in the past but haven’t been that great at holding myself accountable. I hope it’ll be different this time. As mentioned already, I’ll try to read a book and, perhaps, listen to something engaging. Let’s see how this one goes. Wish me luck!
The idea, overall, is to create a balance that somehow allows for both productivity and relaxation. I hope I feel refreshed and re-energised after this break. There’s a lot in store for the next few months so hope to be able to deal with it all *fingers crossed.
Have a great summer!
Great thoughts and advice Naushi! And it’s natural to express the uncertainties that are coming your way.
It is so important to take breaks especially during significant life changes. Expecting your first child is both an exciting and an anxious time. It is natural to feel overwhelmed. Taking time for yourself can help manage that anxiety and prevent catastrophizing. I would advice to remember, it’s okay to ask for help and support and lean on your support system, and it does work wonders.
Parenthood is definitely a journey filled with uncertainties but it is also incredibly rewarding. I remember feeling overwhelmed when I had my first but the moment you strike that balance that you’re not just a parent, you’re an individual too and strike that balance things fall into place. So the ideas of break, taking time off and ideas you’ve mentioned they should be continued in one form or another, and that’s where support system is important to provide that space and time. Carving out time for yourself is important for your well being. Stepping back and gaining perspectives can definitely make a huge difference. Things will fall into place. All the best for this journey and remember there are people around you, you can rely on for any support, help!
These are practical tips, I liked 1 and 4 the most as I also work 75% from home and need to reduce my digital time. Congrats on the baby, all the best to your family over the summer.
